How I met the love of my life

It seems a bit odd to be only 21 and already know who I am going to spend the rest of my life with. We're not married yet but we both know that we're not shopping for anyone else. We met through my sister, Maddi. At that time, she was the General Manager for 88.5FM and she ran an Industrial Show. Emlyn and his best friend Zaq had a dance music group called "Cheese or the Pat Morita Techno Funk Explosion" and they sent my sister a tape and also stopped by the station a few times. Due to their jovality and intellect, my sister became friends with them.

At that time, I was beginning my first quarter at Georgia State Universtiy. Since my brother and sister had an apartment so close to my school, I lived with them during the week. On the weekends, I would go back home so I can work. I didn't know anyone at my new school and all of my old friends went to UGA. Even though it was fun living with my sister and brother, I still felt really alone.

Because my sister was a radio dj, she got tickets to all of the great concerts and I sometimes got to go along. In October of 1996, my sister got tickets to My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult at the Masquerade. I was excited about going out. We got there fashionally late and stood by the side of the stage. Maddi bumped into Emlyn and (at that time I didn't know), his little sister which didn't seem so physically young. My sister introduced us and I said "hello" and smiled. He was wearing a white snow cap and mint green glasses (they looked like something from the fifties), and a long white lab coat. He is a very tall, slender man and very good looking. Like any girl, I wondered about his girl escort and I asked him, "So, who's your friend?". Emlyn responded rather firmly, "Oh, that's my SISTER Vanessa." I smiled. I was very happy to hear that.

The concert ended and we lost each other in the crowd. On my way back to my sister's apartment, she asked me a number of questions about how I thought of him. I told her that I thought he was cute and it would be cool to see him again. A couple of days later, my sister was on the phone with him. She called me over to tell me that Emlyn was going to a rave in Athens, GA at this little place called Bone Shakers and wanted to know if I wanted to go with him. I said "sure". I was very excited to go out with him.

I was frantic! I begged my sister for help on my hair and clothes (this was first date since high school). Soon enough, the door bell rings. I took a deep breath and opened the door. And there he was with a big smile on his face. I greeted him and smiled back. He was accompanied by a friend of his, Russ (who WAS our friend at the time and is now a "Butt-plug" in my book).

So we all got in his silver Volvo and drove to Athens. We talked a little on the way there. Once we arrived, I could immediately hear the bass bumpin' out of the small club house. We boogied down for hours. It was fun!!! The time passed by too quickly and it was time to leave. We met up with some of his friends at Waffle House and had some drinks. I got to meet his friends and learn more about him.

After a while, we left Waffle House and headed home. He dropped me off at my house and that was the end of our first official date on October 14th, 1996.
